Penile implant surgery takes between 45 and 90 minutes. The length of the operation varies depending on the type of prosthesis being fitted and whether additional procedures are required. All prostheses can be inserted through a single incision in the lower part of the penis.
After penile prosthesis surgery, you will stay in hospital for 1 night. The patient is discharged the following day and can return to normal activities within 1 week, following the doctor’s recommendations. It takes 1 month to complete the healing process and 6 weeks to resume sexual intercourse.
If a penile prosthesis is made by an experienced doctor and the right type of prosthesis is chosen, it is a permanent solution for the person. The quality of the prosthesis also affects the functionality and longevity of the prosthesis. If there are no mechanical problems, the prosthesis can be used for life. The life expectancy is 15-20 years.
Who can have a penile prosthesis and what type of prosthesis is used is determined by the doctor according to the individual’s needs. A common feature of people who receive a penile prosthesis is that men with erectile dysfunction cannot achieve an erection during sexual intercourse, or only for a short time.
